Forget the beach parties for a morning — this is Goa’s quieter side. Paddling through mangrove tunnels on the Mandovi River, you’ll spot kingfishers, mudskippers, and if you’re lucky, otters. It’s peaceful, it’s stunning, and it’s the kind of Goa most tourists never see.

The People Behind It

Mandovi Kayaking is run by Rohan D’Souza, a Goan marine biologist who spent years working in conservation before realizing he wanted locals and travelers to see what he was trying to protect. He started offering kayak tours in 2019, hiring local fishermen as guides and teaching them about the ecosystem. Every tour includes a mini-lesson on mangrove ecology — Rohan believes you can’t love what you don’t understand.

“I’ve done my share of Goa trips, but this was something else. Gliding through those narrow mangrove channels felt like entering a secret world — so quiet you could hear fish jumping. Our guide knew every bird by its call. It reminded me that Goa has layers beyond the beaches, and this is one of the best.”
